S. flava var. cuprea

This photo was chosen for its interesting view of pitcher plant leaf form. See how the deep grooves on the back side of the pitcher tube will act as rain gutters to channel water away from its mouth. Only S. purpurea is designed to gather rain. All other tall “trumpet” type Sarracenia avoid filling up with water, otherwise they topple over from the added weight.
